Ypsilanti is surrounded on three sides by Ypsilanti Township, a separate unit of government with about 50,000 residents. It also borders Superior Township, is not too far from Pittsfield Township; and is about 6 miles east of Ann Arbor. People refer to themselves as “Ypsilanti residents” whether they live in the City of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township, Superior Township, or other adjacent townships in the zip codes 48197 and 48198. Only those in the City of Ypsilanti, however, vote in the city elections; each township has their own elected officials. Young people in our community and surrounding ones are served by the Ypsilanti Community Schools.
