The City of Ypsilanti is divided into three voting wards, each of which elect two members to represent them on city council (6 members of the council).
The mayor is voted on by the city voters at large – one member of the council and the chair. The city council appoints a City Manager as the lead staff person to run the city. The mayor in Ypsilanti is a part-time position. She or he is responsible for; chairing city council meetings and offering her or his (single) vote at council, nominating people to be appointed to city boards and commissions which must then be approved by city council, and Representing Ypsilanti inside and outside the community.
